‘My son knew Ishrat for many years’

Ahmedabad, July 10, 2013

Contradicts CBI charge sheet that says Javed knew Ishrat for only a month before they were killed

Gopinath Pillai, father of Javed Pillai, who was killed along with Ishrat Jahan in the June 2004 police encounter, contradicted the CBI’s charge sheet in the case on Tuesday, claiming that his son knew Ishrat for many years.

The CBI charge sheet of July 3 had claimed that Ishrat and her accomplice Javed had known each other for just a month before the encounter.

Addressing the media, Mr. Pillai said here that he was not aware of his son’s exact business but added he had shifted from Kerala to Pune. He was tentatively aware that his son was into garments and women cosmetics business, Mr Pillai said.

“Ishrat’s father was known to my son and he had assured him on the death bed that he would take care of Ishrat and that was the reason he was even taking care of Ishrat’s studies in college,” Mr. Pillai added.

He said he was sure that his son was not attached to any terror organisation and was a law-abiding citizen.

‘Nervous’

“He knew many police officials from Gujarat and the last time that he had spoken to me over the phone he was very nervous.

Prior to the last conversation he had said that the police official that he knew would help him in his life.”

Mr. Pillai expressed his shock that the police had killed him in an encounter and that too because he had terror links.
